A few of you were asking for more links, so here’s what I’ve got:

British Museum Article on Scythian Artifacts including false beard:

Passages on the Scythian’s recorded use of mare urine (premarin) derivatives for a medical feminizing effect can be found in Handbook of the Evolution of Human Sexuality By Michael R. Kauth:

I feel like I should point out again that most of the writing on this seems to have a hard time overcoming this sort of either/or type of thinking. Reconnecting with the actual evidence seem to indicate the Scythians had among them transgender men and women, AND a third gender (Enaree). <–link to a Herodotus translation. OR, it’s entirely possible that these were actually five separate genders.

And that’s something I don’t think I’ve yet seen considered, probably because people have the knee-jerk “that just too many genders!!” reaction…despite the fact that “too many genders” is itself an entirely modern perspective being projected onto the past. (It’s definitely worth further research on my part!)

Entertainingly, a lot of people will (and have, I’m sure) say/id that “five genders” is also an entirely modern perspective being projected onto the past.

So here’s where I say the thing I’m always saying: ALL WE HAVE are modern perspectives. The best we can hope for is to try and view the same evidence and materials through as many of those perspectives as possible, in order to reach something as close to the truth as we can come. And we should do this in order to help histories and peoples that are marginalized today come back toward the center and do justice by their/our importance, humanity, beauty, and validity.

So I’ve been overwhelmed by the black panther comicon appearance and I’ve been dwelling on how revolutionary the black panther movie is going to be, what it’s going to mean to countless people when this movie comes out and how long we still have to go, So I decided to put this short photoset together to illustrate exactly how big of a deal it is and how it is bigger than one person.

it’s so bittersweet because when I was younger (especially growing up where I did, a black kid in Finland) I really wished I had more access to imagery and media that reflected who I was because it would have made my life radically different for the better and I wouldn’t be at 26 (STILL) doing damage control but on the flipside, I’m so in awe of all of the beautiful talent in 2016 that younger black kids are able to see and be inspired by.

I think I was like 4 years old when I conciously picked up race and color via watching Disney’s “Aladdin” and I noticed how Jafar, the evil royal guards etc the villains were more ethnic looking or a shade darker than the “good” characters.

it’s insidious because you’re seeing something but at age 4, you don’t have the comprehension skill or knowledge to break it down and see it for what it is (Colorism, Societal bias against black people which is rooted in centuries of white supremacist doctrine, society associates things that are dark/darker colors with evil, danger, ugliness, dirt etc) and reject it.

so you pick it up and see it on a surface level and you think to yourself “well darker must mean ugly, criminal and less human”…then what happens when you look at yourself in the mirror and find out that you are black?

image

how is that going to impact how you see yourself?

and guess what? if a 4 year old black kid can pick that up and internalize that about him/her/themselves….then a white kid can sponge up the same language and imagery that dehumanizes black people too (subconciously/conciously)…what happens when when these people grow up? become teachers, doctors, law enforcement etc? what kind of impact is that going to have?

I’m going off on a tangent and that’s just one personal example but society does that on a global grand scale and it is largely unchecked.

but honestly though, look at the photoset and think about how many talented people out there that we love and respect….who would NOT have achieved the things they did if it wasn’t for another person before them inspiring them to reach their goals and acting as trail blazers when it seemed as though it was impossible….then think about the flipside and how many people, with all the potential in the world, never lived to become great because they were met with more images dehumanizing them than ones uplifting them…this is why the fight for HONEST representation is important and it continues.

argh, I didn’t plan on typing anything but I got in my feelings after watching this again

…anyway, here are some pictures to make you smile, the next gen gives me hope

// Police Shootings, Protests in NC: What Should Congress Do?//

countableus:

Protests raged through the city of Charlotte, NC, for the second night in a row on Wednesday, following the officer-involved shooting of Keith Lamont Scott. One person was in critical condition after being shot by another civilian and one police officer is also in the hospital after suffering “undisclosed injuries,” CNN reported.

Police say Scott was carrying a gun and was warned multiple times to drop his weapon by police before he was shot and killed on Tuesday, according to NBC News. Scott’s family has said that he was holding a book, but police said that they recovered a weapon and no book was found on the scene. The officer who shot Scott “was not wearing a body camera,” according to CNN.

Scott’s death came just days after the fatal shooting of Terence Crutcher, an unarmed black man, by police in Tulsa, OK, last week. The Dept. of Justice (DOJ) has opened a civil rights investigation into that shooting and is “assessing” the NC case, according to The Root.

In response to the recent shootings, the Congressional Black Caucus is marching to the DOJ today in protest, The Root reported. “It’s become way too common. Way too routine, this cannot be like business as usual anymore,” Rep. Emanuel Cleaver (D-MO) said Wednesday.

Cleaver and other members of Congress on both sides of the aisle have introduced legislation to keep both civilians and police officers safe, hoping to ease racial tensions and prevent these kinds of incidents which have dominated headlines for months, from occurring again.

Tell your reps

Contact your members of Congress and tell them what you think they can or should do to protect our communities. You can read more about some of the legislation Congress is considering below.

Bills currently before Congress

Click on the images to see more information on each bill, vote and tell your reps what you think.

More body cameras

image

The Police CAMERA Act would establish a grant program to give state and local law enforcement agencies money to buy body cameras for all on-duty police officers. The hope is that these body cameras would improve evidence collection, deter excessive force, and improve both police accountability and transparency.

This bill hasn’t gotten a vote yet in either the House or Senate, but it’s one of the most popular bills on Countable (more here) with a 90 percent approval rating from users.

Make officer-involved shooting deaths a federal crime

image

The Police Accountability Act of 2015 would make it a federal crime for law enforcement officers to “commit first degree murder, second degree murder, manslaughter, and other violent crimes.” Such crimes would be prosecutable by the DOJ.

Make murder of law enforcement a federal crime

image

Conversely, the Back the Blue Act would create a new federal crime for killing, attempting to kill, or conspiring to kill a federal judge, law enforcement officer, or public safety officer. For murder, the offender could receive the death penalty, and a conviction would carry a mandatory minimum sentence of 30 years, while attempted murder would result in a minimum 10-year sentence.

Sensitivity training for officers

image

The Police Training and Independent Review Act of 2015 would require states receiving federal funds from specific grant programs to mandate that state law enforcement officers or cadets receive sensitivity training each fiscal year on ethnic and racial bias, cultural diversity, and police interaction with the disabled, mentally ill, and new immigrants. States that fail to comply with these requirements could face a 20 percent reduction in the grant funding.

Make attacks on police officers a hate crime

image

The Blue Lives Matter Act would make it a hate crime to cause or attempt to cause bodily harm to a police officer because of their actual or perceived status as a law enforcement officer. The crime would be punishable by up to 10 years imprisonment. However, in cases involving the actual or attempted murder, kidnapping, or aggravated sexual abuse of an officer the perpetrator could face a life sentence.

Reforming grand jury procedures for deadly force cases

image

The Grand Jury Reform Act would require states to reform the legal process that oversees law enforcement officers who are involved in deadly-force cases, including requiring the appointment of an independent special prosecutor. If states choose not to comply, this bill would cut some of their federal law enforcement funding.

Stopping racial profiling

image

The End Racial Profiling Act of 2015 aims to put an end to all practices of racial profiling by law enforcement officials and agencies across the country. It would require local and state law enforcement agencies to prove that they have adequate policies and practices for eliminating racial profiling in place and grant victims of racial profiling the right to have their concerns taken up in court.

A white man brandishing a gun was filmed driving slowly through a crowd of demonstrators as violence erupted in Charlotte on Wednesday night.

A video of the alarming moment was posted on social media by writer Heather Head in the midst of the chaos.

‘White dude drives into crowd of peaceful protesters, draws gun, allowed to drive away alive. With my own eyes. #CharlotteProtest,’ she wrote alongside the shocking clip.

The man was surrounded by protesters who were marching against the deadly shooting of black man Keith Lamont Scott by a cop on Tuesday afternoon.

image

‘No justice, no peace,’ the group are heard chanting before they spot the man’s weapon.

People begin swearing and shouting 'he’s got a gun’ as the car sounds its horn.

The man was reportedly allowed to drive away from the scene.

There is nothing to suggest the driver was involved in the shooting that left one of the protesters on life support.

The video was widely shared online before it was removed from Ms Head’s Twitter page.

'I’m hearing that the video is inaccessible. I don’t know why. Honestly… I rarely use Twitter so I’m a little confused right now anyway,’ she said.

'I’m so confused by the people saying he wasn’t [white]. I mean, I didn’t take a DNA sample or anything but I saw a lot more of him than a close-up of his arm, and he looked pretty white bread to me. His pals in the car too,’ Ms Head added when people questioned the man’s race.

'I wish no ill on anyone. I just want the truth out. I want people to recognize that racism exists, it’s real, and it has real consequences,’ she said.

Although open carry is legal in North Carolina, it is illegal to openly carry a gun at a protest.

The law states:  'You may not carry a weapon at a parade, funeral procession, picket line, or other demonstration, except for guns carried on a rack in a pickup truck.

'You may not carry a weapon during civil disorder, riot, or other disturbance involving three or more people.’

From what i understand, its also illegal or at least a misdemeanor to brandish a weapon without at least being threatening in some way. This dumb shit just gets stopped in traffic and pulls out a gun to casually display out his window lol

If you don’t understand Black Lives Matter after Terence Crutcher’s death, you never will

Countless studies, statistics, investigations, and anecdotes tell us that a person’s race can determine the kinds of interactions he or she will have with the police — and how likely it is that he or she will survive the encounter.

At this point, this reality is largely beyond debate.

Yet the topic of unarmed black people being killed by law enforcement officers at wildly disproportionate rates is often dubbed controversial, and is framed as an issue about which reasonable people can disagree. It’s not.

Many characterize the dilemma as the result of a lack of trust between police and communities.” That obscures the problem.

The phrase “black lives matter,” which has been used to draw attention to the problem, has inspired its own pushback, with critics suggesting it means that “blue” (police) lives, or nonblack lives in general, aren’t important. That’s hugely confused.

But any sincere confusion about what the Black Lives Matter movement means and what motivates critics of racialized police violence should end with the news of the circumstances of 40-year-old Terence Crutcher’s death in Tulsa, Oklahoma, last week (to say nothing of the police shooting in Charlotte, North Carolina, of Keith Lamont Scott on Tuesday night, the details of which are still unfolding).

After Crutcher’s car stalled on the highway, police responding to a call about an abandoned vehicle, saw Crutcher — who video shows was following instructions and who police have admitted was unarmed — and deemed him “a bad dude” who would need to be tasered. Moments later, officer Betty Shelby shot him dead.

Anyone should be able to see that this was wrong. The fact that it happened, that the officer may or may not be held responsible, and that it hasn’t led to national consensus of horror and outrage paints a clear, simple picture of the reality that people are protesting against when they say “black lives matter.”

This shooting, the latest in a long, long string of similar cases, stands out. Because of the specific circumstances, it’s a tragedy that even people who hold deeply misguided beliefs about black criminality or intense loyalty to police officers should be able to see as such. There are no distractions. Those who can’t identify injustice in this latest textbook example of how racial bias can lead to death probably won’t see it anywhere.

It’s Black Lives Matter 101.

PRRRRRRRRRRR-PRRRRRRRRRRRR

Reblogging right now because I’m having a random anxiety attack and figured someone else might need soothing too.

Cheetahs are one of my favorite animals, and they have anxiety too! They get spooked pretty easily and actually are often given therapy dogs in order to help them with their anxiety.

They’re very sweet; they just have big claws and big teeth. They’re really loving when in groups and habitually do social grooming for hours and hours. They’re a lovely animal. :3 To hear them purr is a pure delight.
